On November 7, 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the NxtGen Nexus happy hour at C&O in Marina Del Rey, and let me tell you – it was an absolute blast. If you’ve never been to C&O, it’s that spot with the endless garlic knots that just keep coming at you like a well-meaning relative trying to offer unsolicited advice. Perfect for a gathering of family business next-gens like us, right?
The event brought together people from family businesses of all shapes and sizes – from legacy brands to up-and-coming ventures – and it was refreshing to be surrounded by folks who just get it. We all come from different industries and backgrounds, but one thing binds us: the unique and sometimes challenging path of being the “next gen” in a family business. There’s something oddly comforting about swapping stories with people who understand the day-to-day drama of family meetings, the constant balancing act of respect and autonomy, and that one relative who seems to have strong opinions about everything.
Family Business Hot Seat
One of the highlights of the night was the “family business hot seat,” where yours truly had the chance to hop in and share my story about transitioning into my family’s business. Now, if you’ve ever been in the hot seat, you know it’s equal parts therapy and stand-up comedy. I got to talk about my journey, the twists and turns of joining the business, and those early days where you’re basically just trying not to trip over yourself (or worse, embarrass the family). I shared a few of my most memorable moments and some of the challenges I faced and still face – like the occasional communication challenges and opportunity to leave a legacy for my family.
But what made it even more impactful was talking to other next gens and hearing everyone else’s journeys and knowing that those ups and downs are part of the ride for everyone. We shared some pretty honest conversations about the pressures we face – from expectations to earn our spot to the struggles of adapting family business traditions for a new generation. We laughed about the endless “When I was your age…” stories and traded survival tips, like always having a few ready responses to gracefully sidestep a debate with an elder family member.
Of course, it wasn’t all serious – it wouldn’t be a family business gathering if there wasn’t some humor in the mix. And nothing says “next-gen solidarity” like raising a glass to surviving the latest holiday gathering unscathed. I mean, if you can navigate family dynamics over Thanksgiving dinner, you’re basically trained for any high-stakes negotiation.
The night wrapped up with a few more rounds of stories, some cheers to new friends, and enough garlic knots to feed a small army. The best part? Knowing that I’m not alone in this journey. Being a part of the next generation in a family business can sometimes feel like you’re living out a reality show – drama, laughter, high stakes, and all. But getting to be with a roomful of people who are living that same reality made it feel more like…well, like a family.
So, here’s to more happy hours, more shared stories, and maybe fewer unsolicited opinions (we can hope, right?). Until next time, NxtGen fam!
